There’s an awful lot about sexuality and gender and labels on my dashboard today. I think there are a few things that get lost in this, a lot of the time, so I want to say them.
Most stuff is a spectrum. I mean—in life, not just when it comes to sexuality and gender. But labeling words aren’t good at spectrums; they tend to collapse the infinities of variation into “is” and “is not”. Ticky boxes. That can make people, real people, who live on the spectrum, feel erased, because there aren’t words out there that neatly describe their reality.
Whether or not a person chooses to self-identify, and how they choose to self-identify, is their right and their choice. No one should be forced to self-identify, and people who do self-identify should never be forced to explain themselves.
